What moves a populace to revolution?

At what point is revolution an acceptable and a proper course of action?

At what point will history look back and rather than chastise a revolt, admire it?

i have a very good feeling that things in the cnmi are about to change.

all i can say is that "it is about time!"

so it begins.

- just one of many.

Is the rumor true that the Federal Government is secretly aiding in this Revolution?

There wont be any revolution in the CNMI. When people are closely related, never they would think of revolting against their own. You know locals are looking for each other --brother's keeper way. Only me and my me mentality.

You'd be suprised how fast families turn on extended family members when the very basics of living are at stake

Welcome back. Of course you do realize now that people will think aside from running Lil's blog, I'm also running yours. It's as if I am the only one in Saipan against incompetent leadership and corruption. Geeez Louise!

We need more bloggers to come out and challenge the Fitial and OBN mafiosos.

Once again, welcome back.

Revolution to what? What will post revolutionary Saipan look like?

Pragmatic Plato said...

The fear of jumping out of the pan and into the fire has been raised. In all honestly I think it is safe to say that the fire is in the pan right now.

What we need in post-revolutionary CNMI is a smaller government. We are still spending more today in government expenditures than we did in 2001 even given the exodus of the garment factories, declines in tourism, increases in fuel rates, etc.

There is no reason that we should be spending $160 million dollars of local funds and $70 million of federal funds to operate a government for a population of 50,000 people. That is almost $5K a year per person.

- Overall reduction in force within the government. Do away with duplication of offices and services.
- Part Time Legislature or a unicameral at-large body. With no more discretionary funds so long as the LB exists or visa versa.
-Abolish municipal councils or Mayors’ offices (one or the other and reduce size)
- End to sole sourced contracts
- Cut all existing special interest contracts with consultants and lobbying firms that the administration has entered into.
- A privatized CUC with proper gov't oversight. Brought about through some type of receivership and open bidding process done on a global scale.
- Immediately review all contracts (sole sourced) within the last ten years and investigate them thoroughly.
- Prosecute any wrongdoers to the fullest extent of the law.
- Restore the Retirement fund by ceasing all current aversions of payments to the funds and begin paying back in what was taken.
- Sole Focus of the Government to be on reviving the CNMI as a tourist destination. Map out a plan and adhere to it.
- Immediately grant some type of improved status and petition the US to grant green cards to existing guest workers. Put an end to the guest worker program immediately.
- Put to vote the abolishment of Article XII

I could go on but for now those are some important things I would personally like to see. I am only one mind among many and I am very open to other ideas or changes to some of my posted suggestions.

Revolution begins at the ballot box. If you locals would vote intelligently and not based on who can get you the most free stuff, then maybe you have a chance in this world. As long as you keep electing the same people over and over again, you deserve what you get. The world is laughing at you.

And by the way. Cing for representative? Are you kidding? Didn't he already have a chance to make things better, as an elected legislator? Same goes for Crisostomo. He does nothing now and will do nothing later. They had their chance. You locals want to show the world that you have guts and can do the right thing? Elect John Davis- yeah he has the wrong color and the wrong family background and just about everything else about him is wrong according to your normal standards for your leaders. But he is smart and he does care about the CNMI. He won't give you a picnic table though so I guess he is unqualified. Pity.

Valid points Plato, especially regarding spending- when the BOE interviewed the two potential heads they did it at PIC. Seems like they could have done it at their Capitol Hill facility.

But who among existing or potential politicos has the guts to downsize the government? What social and economic effects will thousands (literally) of newly unemployed former governemnt workers have? Is it really possible to end all special interest sole source contracts? Who in the government is capable of effectively overseeing a privatized CUC? Who do you trust to investigate a decades worth of sole source deals? Is the local judiciary capable of prosecuting wrongdoers to the fullest extent of the law? Is the local population even capable of producing an effective jury pool?

As with your entry above, I could go on and on, but...

How about starting with the "One Term Governor Act of 2008"?

1. Shorten the next Governor and Legislature's term so we don't have elections every year.

2. Give them a mandate to cut government employment and spending by a specified amount.

I've been thinking about your question: "What moves a populace to revolution?"

The answer: Free Spam

I don't think Saipan's got a revolution in her future. Ed's call for a thousand folks to confront the Gov at his office will be interesting on the evening news, but it won't change a thing unless they show up with axes, rebar clubs and molotov cocktails.

Revolutionary change is purchased with the blood of the starry eyed naive, and then it's 'Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss'.

Black Bloc anyone?

With close to 75% of government employees holding jobs they are unqualified for, what makes you think that these 2,000 - 3,000 employees will come out in droves and revolt against the same government paying em? Wishful thinking, if you ask me...

Now, in the case that they do come out and protest, where is the CNMI government going to get 2,000 - 3,000 replacements should government employees be laid off?

Protesting or revolting against the government is not the solution... REPLACING the CNMI's current Leadership is the answer! Circulate recall petitions for both the Legislature and the Adminstration... And if that doesn't work, then hey! rallying 2-3,000 people won't either!

Our best bet now is the 2009 elections! And the people will prevail!

Anonymous said...

The sad thing is that prior to every election we always say the same old thing...CHANGE. Can't say that any major election had any real significant changes added.

Revolt? Revolt to what and who? The only revolt that will happen is 10,000 Filipinos demanding green cards.

Plato asked WHY? I offer you the following message:

Don't you find it hypocritical that thousands of discontent voters are still being fluenced by the same powers-that-be?

I mean, they talk about corruption and past mistakes caused by our leaders (both past and present), yet they openly support candidates whom are associated by these same leaders. When is ENOUGH really ENOUGH?!?! And what CHANGE do these hypocrites speak of?

Examples:

Pete A. Tenorio

Wasn't Pete A. a Founding Father? Wasn't he a former Lt. Governor? Did he not serve 2 terms as Washington Rep? Is Pete A. GOP's candidate? The same GOP that holds the leaderships of both Houses of the present Legislature.

Kilili

Wasn't Kilili a Congressman? Isn't the latter's committee being chaired by the son of a 3-term governor? Who's endorsing Kilili? Are there any GOP legislators supporting him?

John Gonzales

Why is John Gonzales running, really? Is he not working for the Department of Public Lands? Does he also work at the Governor's Office? Is he being endorsed by the Governor? Is the Covenant Party endorsing him?

Critics to present day CNMI policies who support any of the three above-listed candidates should just shut the fuck up! Really! Bunch of Hypocrites!

Biba Pete A. and Regret Later!

Biba Kilili and Complain Later!

Biba Gonzales and Regret and Complain Later!

As for those who want REAL CHANGE, ask yourselves the following:

1) Why is the CNMI in such a mess today?

2) Who caused the mess?

3) Who's in power and what has s/he done to address this mess?

4) And finally, why should YOU listen to them on who YOU should vote for as the 1st NMI Delegate to the U.S. Congress?

Think about it and vote your conscience. DO NOT VOTE in accordance with what others think or who they believe you should vote for! Basically, DON'T BE A HYPOCRITE.

Biba CNMI!

Noni above must be getting very desperate with his post.

So what if John works with Charles Reyes at the Governor's office?

So what if he is being endorsed by the Covenant Party?

NOTHING.

Vote John "Bolis" Gonzales.

Biba Covenant Party for another 4 years.

The noni above kind of almost sort of makes a valid point by asking who is REALLY responsible for the mess we're in. Why, it's us of course. We installed the bastards in office, and we'll continue to do so.

Well actually I didn't. Closest I came to voting was when Tina came on the scene. But then she lurched off course to do the non-rezzie thing with Ma'am Wendy and I changed my mind.

Maybe next time.
